Note Overlay privacy policy
Daylight Computer Co · Effective 2026-11-06
This policy covers Note Overlay, the handwritten notes app for the Daylight DC-1 tablet, and in particular its optional Google Drive feature. The short version: your notes stay on your tablet, and if you connect Google Drive they go to your own Drive. Daylight does not receive them.
What stays on your tablet
Your notebooks, pages and pen strokes are stored on the tablet. Note Overlay contains no analytics, advertising or crash-reporting software. If something goes wrong, the app writes a short fault record to a file on the tablet; it does not contain your note text, and it is never sent anywhere automatically. You can choose to share that file yourself.
Until you start connecting Google Drive, Note Overlay does not go online. From then on, Note Overlay goes online only to talk to Google (oauth2.googleapis.com and www.googleapis.com). Daylight runs no server that Note Overlay sends data to. If you use the separate backup-to-a-folder feature, Note Overlay hands the backup to the storage app you pick on the tablet, and that app handles it.
Google Drive: what we access
Connecting Google Drive is optional, and nothing is sent until you choose to connect. When you connect, Note Overlay asks Google for one permission only:
https://www.googleapis.com/auth/drive.file— access only to files that Note Overlay itself creates in your Drive. It cannot see or open your other Drive files.
Note Overlay also reads your Google account's email address, to show you which account is connected, and your Drive storage numbers, only to warn you when your Drive is full.
What is uploaded, and where
- A PDF of each notebook, and a PDF of each month of your Daily Note, in a folder called "Note Overlay" in your own Google Drive, with subfolders for your sections or projects. The file and folder names are your notebook titles and section names.
- If you use more than one tablet, or an older version of the app, with the same account, the folder name can include your tablet's device name, for example "Note Overlay (tablet name)". If that name is already taken, a few characters of the tablet's hashed identifier are added to it.
- Each file carries a few hidden labels that Google stores with it, so the app can find its own files again: the notebook's internal id, content checksums, a random id for each upload, and hashes of the identifiers for the tablet, the account and your sections and projects (the hashes, not the identifiers themselves).
- Optional, off unless you turn it on: "Ink for the Mac" files (
.day), which hold your pen strokes, pages, typed text and to-dos, in a "Daylight data" folder in your Drive.
Uploads happen in the background, about ten minutes after you stop writing, when you put the pad away, and once a day, and whenever you tap "Sync now". Syncing is one way, from the tablet to Drive. Note Overlay never deletes or trashes files in your Drive. If you delete a notebook on the tablet, its PDF is moved to a "Deleted on tablet" folder in your Drive rather than removed.
Daylight never receives your files
Files go directly from your tablet to your Google Drive. Daylight Computer Co does not receive, store or have access to your notes, your PDFs, your .day files, your sign-in tokens or your Google account data.
Sign-in and tokens
You sign in on Google's own web page using a short code (Google's sign-in for devices without a keyboard), for example by scanning it with your phone. Note Overlay never sees your Google password.
After you approve, the tablet keeps a sign-in token from Google, together with your account email and a hashed account identifier. This is stored only on the tablet, encrypted with a key held in the tablet's Android Keystore, and excluded from Android backups and device transfer. The short-lived access token is kept in memory only. Tokens are never written to logs.
To keep track of which files it has made, the app also keeps a small record on the tablet of Drive file ids, names (your notebook titles) and checksums. It contains no token and no note text.
Disconnecting and revoking access
- In Note Overlay's settings, tap Disconnect. This stops syncing, deletes the stored token and its encryption key from the tablet, and asks Google to revoke the app's access. If the tablet is offline at that moment, Google may not receive the request.
- You can always remove Note Overlay's access yourself in your Google Account, under Security → Third-party access (myaccount.google.com/connections).
- The file-tracking record described above stays on the tablet after Disconnect, so that reconnecting finds the same files instead of making duplicates. Uninstalling the app removes it.
Keeping and deleting your files
Files Note Overlay has uploaded belong to you and stay in your Drive, including after you disconnect. You can delete them in Google Drive at any time. If you delete a PDF in Drive while still connected, the app makes it again the next time that notebook changes; disconnect first if you want it gone for good.
No sale or sharing
We do not sell, rent or share your data. Daylight does not receive it in the first place, so there is nothing for us to sell, share or use for advertising.
Google API Services User Data Policy
Note Overlay's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Data from your Google account is used only to provide the Drive sync you turned on, is not transferred to anyone else, is not used for advertising, and is not read by people.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and its effective date.
